The Tumult

Also known as the Lost Years

It was near the end of Frostide when The Tumult began.

The single most devastating event that has ever struck our world began began with a resounding cracking that rattled around in your skull and toppled buildings. Even the sturdy Vein had portions of its upper buildings and some of its arches collapse into the ice below.

It was deadly quiet for a short time after the crack but the next day the hissing followed. Citizens busied themselves with recovering and repairing after destruction, beleiving the worst to be over but still it continued to hiss like a leaking pressure canister. The hiss was insistent, lasting over what must have been a dozen pulses.

Three nights after the hissing began, the death-fog rolled across the ice. Anyone caught outside or in a drafty building became untethered from magic. The undead fell where they stood. It was an unprecedented culling of the populace during the course of a single evening. Some of the best of us were lost that day.

An immeasurable number of nights became an immeasurable number of years. The magic or undead beings who remained sequestered themselves away for the longest Cloistering that has ever happened. They stayed in their mountaintop estates, their homes, or the Metro The Tenebrous empire struggled through horrific famines and isolation. The sun was completely blotted out by the ever present fog

Beyond our borders we heard stories of horrific beasts of unfathomable size stalking the mists.

Tzar Greycastle and his other scholars began to dabble with secrets, hoping to protect his people in this time of devastation. Ordinary Magic became more difficult and almost impossible in the current circumstances. We began to believe even all but the blood god had abandoned us. With slow innovations and discoveries Blood Technology was developed, using the latent magic in both blood and a unique stone from Roseclad that allows even the mundane to unlock blood's potential power the empire began to find solutions for its predicament. It was during this time of innovation that I was brought into Hartspire to begin this archive.

Using the blood technology, and a sizable tithe from the people of the empire during the Algiddark he could make the air in the empire so cold that even the fog would freeze instead into a dangerous snowfall. This gave enough space to develop a more permanent means of protection, pumps that generated powerful protective air currents that formed a bubble of safety. These projects marked the beginning of the end of the Tumult for empire despite the dour situation beyond the cities.
